Mitch Daniels' Desperate Claims

January 14, 2012

DANIELS’ DESPERATE CLAIMS

Governor Mitch Daniels appeared on this weekend’s edition Inside Indiana Business, and continued to offer nothing more than good old-fashioned conjecture and speculation to push for passage of the so-called “right to work” bill.

In the interview, Gov. Daniels claimed that Volkswagen did not return his phone call because Indiana allowed rights at work. Really? How could he possibly know why they didn’t call back if, hold onto your seat, they didn’t call back? Is Gov. Daniels’ a psychic?

We don’t think so either. Perhaps it’s this level of paranoia that facilitated his desperate attempt to lockdown the Statehouse and ram through the right to work for less bill without public comment.

The truth is that Volkswagen has number of facilities in non-RTW states, including Michigan,Wisconsin and Ilinois.  It's also true that Indiana has attracted plenty of foreign investment with the current labor laws we have – and Gov. Daniels likes to brag about it. According to his own Indiana Economic Development Corporation, “Indiana is home to more than 700 international companies, including BP, Rolls-Royce, Aisin, BAE Systems, ArcelorMittal, Bosch, Siemens, Brevini Wind, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Nestlé.”  And, the IEDC reports “Indiana is the only U.S. state with three Japanese automotive assembly plants, including Honda’s newest facility, a combined Toyota/Subaru assembly plant, and a Toyota production facility.”

Not too shabby for a state full of workers' with actual rights.

Unfortunately for Hoosiers, in Gov. Daniels’ desperation to push through this overwhelmingly unpopular and unnecessary bill, he’ll say and anything -- including accepting countless dollars from secret donors, locking Hoosiers out of the Statehouse and jumping to irrational and baseless conclusions that are beneath the office in which he serves.
